A superb illustration of this is found in the well-known parable of the sower. In that story, our Lord revealed that there is a class of men who are likened to seed sown on rocky ground. He says, ‘they receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root; they believe for a while, but in time of testing they fall away’ (Luke 8:13).
